Cango Caves
Located just 30 km north of Oudtshoorn in the Swartberg Mountains, the Cango Caves are South Africa’s oldest tourist attraction and the continent’s largest show cave system. This 20-million-year-old underground marvel is a must-see for self-travelers exploring the Klein Karoo. With dramatic limestone formations and expert-guided tours, the Cango Caves offer an unforgettable adventure beneath the earth’s surface.

Why Visit the Cango Caves?
The Cango Caves are a natural and cultural landmark, inhabited since the Early Stone Age and protected since 1820 to preserve their unique formations. The caves’ vast chambers, like Van Zyl and Botha Halls, are illuminated to highlight stalactites and stalagmites, making them a photographer’s dream. Whether you’re a history buff, geology enthusiast, or adventure seeker, the caves cater to all.

Self-Travel Tips for the Cango Caves
Drive from Oudtshoorn via the scenic R328, a 30-minute tarred road through the Swartberg foothills. Arrive early to secure a spot, as tours are limited and popular in summer (December–February). Wear comfortable shoes and clothing, as the caves can be humid. The Cango Caves are not wheelchair-friendly, and photography is restricted inside to protect the formations. After your tour, visit the on-site restaurant or curio shop for souvenirs. Combine your visit with a trip to the nearby Cango Ostrich Show Farm or Rust en Vrede Waterfall.
