Hello!

I’m David Batzofin, an award-winning blogger and photographer based in Johannesburg (www.travelandthings.co.za).

On a recent journey, I had the pleasure of discovering the captivating Klein Karoo and the breathtaking Swartberg Mountains.

During my exploration, I came across True South Travel, run by Jan Bester, a seasoned mountain guide with nearly 20 years of experience in the region.
Intrigued by their guided Swartberg Mountain tours and the unique “High 5” Stargazing experience, I knew I had to learn more.

I hope you enjoy reading about my adventure, and I invite you to explore the Klein Karoo yourself, where Jan will take you on the road less traveled.

The Swartberg Mountain Reserve
A UNESCO World Heritage Site

Are you thinking of a holiday in South Africa?
What is the first destination that comes to mind?
Kruger National Park? Cape Town? The Garden Route?
All these have been promoted over the years and have thus become almost ingrained when making travel plans.
Is time to think out of the ubiquitous travel destination box?
Is it time to think like there IS no box?

True South Travel, situated in Oudtshoorn that has a range of destinations that will fulfil YOUR need for a new travel destination as well as introduce you to an area of our country that is not that well known.
Let Jan Bester – Owner of True South Travel and founder of the H.O.P.E Foundation tell the story.
Sharing his passion for nature and the Swartberg Mountains with you is his passion.
Listening to the knowledge that he has accumulated over the past two decades as a specialist guide in the region will, without a doubt, change your perception of the Klein Karoo forever!
A friendly word of caution…his passion for this pristine World Heritage Site is contagious and you might find yourself returning here more than once.

His tours incorporate the iconic 27 km long Swartberg Pass, a gateway to unforgettable exploration.
Winding up from Prince Albert to an elevation of 1,583 meters, where it connects to Oudtshoorn, the ‘capital’ of the Klein Karoo this pass offers steep zigzags and views that will leave you breathless.
Master road engineer, Thomas Bain, was responsible for the design of the gravel surfaced Pass that began in 1881 and opened on 10 January 1886.
The dry-stone technique used to build the pass required intense manual labour and is as solid today as it was when it opened 136 years ago.

Declared a National Monument in 1988 the pass forms part of the Swartberg Nature Reserve, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 2004.

If you’re feeling adventurous, take a side trip to Die Hell along a thrilling 32-kilometer gravel road.

There is a reason that the Klein Karoo is  known as “Big Sky Country,” as it treats you to spectacular nighttime stargazing, unimpeded by city lights.

Here, you’ll have the opportunity to witness the Southern Celestial High 5— stars, galaxies, planets, constellations, and globular clusters.

The Swartberg circular route takes you through the scenic landscapes of Prince Albert and Meiringspoort, offering a journey through time and nature. As you ascend nearly 900 meters through ancient sandstone formations that are over 300 million years old, you’ll be immersed in a thriving ecosystem filled with diverse fynbos species. Keep an eye out for the graceful Klipspringer antelope and majestic Verreaux Eagles soaring overhead.
At the summit, awesome panoramic views of the Klein and Great Karoo await, capturing your heart and imagination.

But the Swartberg Mountain Reserve isn’t just about natural beauty—it’s also a place where cultural heritage comes alive. Jan’s commitment to uplifting local rural communities is exemplified through the H.O.P.E. Foundation.

For those seeking eco-adventures and hiking trails, True South Travel offers scenic eco-tours that take you north towards the Swartberg Mountains. Accompanied by a qualified eco-guide, you’ll embark on a journey that balances observation and interaction with nature. Whether you’re a bird enthusiast or simply seeking tranquility, the diverse flora and fauna will bring you joy. Witness sunbirds savoring the nectar of the proteas and immerse yourself in a serene landscape that evokes a simpler time when horse-drawn wagons were common and friendships lasted a lifetime.

The moderately intense hiking trails require no special gear—just sturdy footwear. At an elevation of 1,350 meters, you’ll be rewarded with stunning vistas, followed by a light lunch to wrap up your day of adventure.
